Vineyard

East-facing, cool site at 910m altitude. Vines planted from 1996 to 2002, all on own roots. 2.5m rows, 1.5m between vines. VSP canopy management with mostly organic protection, but also synthetics if warranted.

Yield: 15 hl/ha

Soil Type

Sandy clay loam over Ordovician/Silurian, red cracking clay with quartzite and siltstone inclusions.

Harvest Notes

Second crop of Chardonnay grafted on Pinot noir trunks. Hand-picked on 22nd April after a cold, wet growing season. Considerable pre-harvest removal of poor bunches.

Vinification

Air-bag pressed to barrel without settling. Spontaneous fermentation - no added yeast.

Malolactic fermentation: Partial without inoculation.

Maturation

11 months on lees in 2 year-old French barriques, partly without sulfur dioxide.

Oak influence: Deliberately subtle oak flavours, but with barrel-fermentation influence.
Months in bottle: 16
