Vineyard
East-facing, cool site at 910m altitude. Vines planted from 1996 to 2002, all on own roots. 2.5m rows, 1.5m between vines. VSP canopy management with mostly organic protection, but also synthetics if warranted.
Yield: 65 hl/ha
Soil Type
Sandy clay loam over Ordovician/Silurian, red cracking clay with quartzite and siltstone inclusions.
Harvest Notes
Hand-picked on 15th April after a warm season with well-spaced rain.
Vinification
De-stemmed whole berry fermentation with 10% whole bunches. Temperature rises to about 34°C. Pressed at 1Bé.
Malolactic fermentation: Yes, inoculated.
Maturation
25% new French oak barriques, the balance 2-4 years-old including a puncheon. Bottled after 11 months.
Oak influence: Aimed for subtle complexity.
