Description

A wine of subtle intrigue that repays patience and contemplation, our 2017 Rhone blend displays the hallmark balance and poise of the vintage. Beautifully complex aromas of pear, quince, honeysuckle and jasmine. The palate is savoury and expansive, while remaining understated, with the elegance of the vintage providing lift and freshness to the notes of orange blossom and quince that drive and sustain the palate.

Vineyard

Elevation: 100-140 m above sea level. Cool climate with average 800 ml rainfall per annum.

Yield: Low, ranging from 3-8 tonnes per ha hl/ha

Soil Type

Ancient weathered silty grey loam over a mudstone and calcareous siltstone. The same stone was used to construct the underground cellars at Yeringberg in the 1860s.

Harvest Notes

Following the usual pattern, the Marsanne ripened before the Roussanne, so they were fermented and barrel aged separately. The Marsanne was picked on March 17th and the Roussanne was picked on March 23rd.

Vinification

Each variety was handpicked, sorted, destemmed and crushed before pressing. The juice was fermented in tank, then transferred to old oak barrels as soon as fermentation was finished. The wine then stayed in the same barrels until a couple of days before bottling. There was a little lees stirring over the winter.

Malolactic fermentation: No malolactic fermentation.

Maturation

11 months in older French oak.

Oak influence: We try to keep the oak impact in Marsanne/Roussanne very subtle, so we use no new barrels for this wine.
Months in bottle: 24
