Vineyard
The vineyards of Ried Ulm vary in elevation between approximately 200 and 255 metres and predominantly slope towards the south-east, although some parts also slope southwards. The substratum is composed of approximately 15 million-year-old limestone and calcareous sandstone, which formed around the edges of the sea that filled the Vienna Basin at that time. These stones are largely made up from the skeletal remains of lime-secreting red algae. The whole area is shown as vineyards in the Franziszeische Kataster (Austrian cadastral survey) from 1819, but the modern-day designation of “Ulm” is not used at the time.
