Vineyard: Langenloiser Käferberg 1ÖTW
Ried Käferberg lies at an elevation of roughly 300 to 370 metres and has a southern and south-eastern orientation. The vines grow on different types of soil with a diverse substratum underneath. Within a small area, there are ancient crystalline rocks such as amphibolite, gneiss and mica schist, alongside much younger clay marl and sands, as well as rarer occurrences of gravel. These sediments were deposited in the former Paratethys sea approx. 16 million years ago. The crystalline rocks, however, are more than 290 million years old. An escarpment reveals the clayey marine sediments sitting directly on top of the crystalline rocks. The Administrativkarte Niederösterreich (administrative map of Lower Austria) includes mention of the plot name “Käfer Berg” (“Käfer B.”) and shows it as partly under vine. The name can be traced back to the name of a former owner, or possibly to a particularly large number of beetles on the mountain (Käfer meaning “beetle”). Ried Käferberg is a warm vineyard that is sheltered from the wind. Grüner Veltliner is the predominant variety grown here.
