Vineyard
Ried Satzing is located on a slope to the west of Gumpoldskirchen and borders Ried Rasslerin to the south-west. The vineyards range in elevation between 260 and 320 metres, reaching as far as the edge of the forest. They face south-east almost in their entirety. The vines grow on hard rocks from the substratum of the Calcareous Alps only in the uppermost parts of the Ried. In the lower sections, young scree prevails, as well as gravel and conglomerate from the Vienna Basin. These are around 16 million years old and were once deposited along the shoreline of the former sea that used to occupy the Vienna Basin. The soil is a loamy, calcareous loose-sediment brown earth containing a moderate proportion of stones. However, the soil has a good capacity for storing water. The Administrative map 1:28.800 (administrative map, 1864–1881) shows widespread vineyards at this location. The name “Satzing” comes from neu aussetzen, meaning to newly set out. In terms of climate, this is a very warm site that lies directly on the border of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods). Rotgipfler and Zierfandler are the predominant varieties grown here.
