Description

The Revoluzzer is dense and intense, full of power and complexity. It smells of lemon zest, pineapple and butter. The palate is rich with fresh acidity and a mouth-filling texture that is reminiscent of both Burgundy and the Rheingau.

The REVOLUZZER tells the story of a fighter for democracy and freedom of the press, 200 years ago. Adam von Itzstein prepared the first national assembly of 1848 in our wine making village, Hallgarten. Today, you can enjoy our wines at the summer house, where the REVOLUZZER met 200 years ago.

Vineyard: Hallgartener Jungfer

The Hallgarten Jungfer (virgin) is located about 100 m above the Rhine river. It has a south facing exposure, with the slope having about 15 degrees gradient. Since the start of the Große Gewächs classification more than 50 years ago, the Hallgarten Jungfer has always been one of the best sites in the Rheingau region. The Hallgarten Jungfer is protected from cold northern winds by the Taunus hills which are up to 600 m high. The site itself is located about 180 m above sea level.

Yield: 3000 hl/ha

Soil Type

The soil is a combination of clay and loam with a lot of Taunus quartz. Due to multiple waves of building and melting of ice during the Ice Age there are a lot of different soil types in the Rheingau region. Even sometimes within one hundred meters there are three different soil types.

Harvest Notes

The grapes were pre-selected twice before the final harvest in the middle of October. As with all our wines we only hand pick.

Vinification

The grapes were macerated for 48 hours, then pressed with a smooth basket press and after settling the grapes, they were fermented with natural yeastss in oak barrels of 600 liters (Halbstückfass). After 24 months the best barrels are selected and the wine is bottled.

Malolactic fermentation: Yes, the wine went through malolactic fermentation without inducing it, parallel to the alcoholic fermentation. Again, this was without any addition of yeast in the 600 liter barrels.

Maturation

The 2019 vintage was a hot year, but during the harvest we had some rain. Hence sugar levels of the must were outstanding and guarantee long ageing potential. While the 2019 vintage can be enjoyed now, it would benefit from a few more years in the bottle.

Oak influence: The oak barrels we use are between 3 and 5 years old, so the impact of the oak itself is rather limited. Nevertheless the microoxidation makes it a very balanced wine with well integrated notes of oak.
