Description

The 2021 Herrenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs shows flavours of yellow stone fruit such as peach and apricot on the nose. On the palate the wine has a wonderful complexity, shows great minerality and is obviously influenced by the long lies contact. The fresh acidity and powerful, but elegant body are another proof of a wine of great potential (optimum drinking after 2026 but can be cellared until at least 2041).

Vineyard: Ungsteiner Herrenberg

The Herrenberg is one of the most famous vineyards in the Pfalz region. In 1828 it was classified by the Royal-Bavarian Land Taxation laws as a first class vineyard. Seen from the climatic point of view its special position can be explained by the southerly orientation of the vineyard which guarantees optimum exposure to the sun. From the west it is protected by a large forest (Pfälzer Wald) avoiding damage from thunder and hailstorms. The Pfalz region is one of the warmest and sunniest regions in Germany. Annual rainfall is just enough to produce premium white and red wines. The mild climate gives powerful but elegant wines with a good acid structure.

Yield: 38 hl/ha

Soil Type

The soil is dominated by a high content of limestone which adds a very mineral character to the wine.

Vinification

Grapes are hand picked and macerated on the skins. Gentle pressing followed by spontaneous fermention partly in wood and partly in stainless steel. Long lees contact.

Maturation

The wine needs at least 5 years to reach its first peak of development, potential of 20 years+.

Oak influence: There is only a minor influence on the wine of vinification in wooden casks. Vinification in wood ensures greater complexitiy, a more elegant acidity structure and longer aging potential.
